Fixing Penn Station and Hudson Tunnels
A direct connection from Grand Central to Penn Station, along with new Hudson River tunnels!
This WEBEO explores the possibilities of improving the situation of Penn Station in New York City. Penn Station is severly overcrowded and outdated, and is poorly connected with other lines in New Jersey and Long Island. There are currently only 2 tracks under the Hudson River, and no direct connection from Penn Station to Grand Central.
This project will aim to increase capacity at Penn Station and its Hudson River tunnel, as well as offer a direct connection to Grand Central Terminal. New Jersey Transit riders will finally be able to take a train to their jobs in eastern Midtown without having to find their own means of transportation after alighting from Penn Station. Additionally, two new tunnels will be built under the Hudson River, increasing the total capacity from 2 to 4 tracks. Finally, a new, state-of-the-art station will be constructed north of Penn Station, consting of 8 tracks, 4 on each level.
Additionally, the entire Northeast Corridor from the Kearny Junction to the Tonnele Ave. Portal will be upgraded to 4 tracks, with a new 2-track elevated alignment running parallel to the existing tracks.
Such construction of this expansion will greatly reduce stress in the infrastructure of the NJ-NY area, and further aid future economic growth both in Manhattan and New Jersey.
