Commuter Rail Tunnel in Lower Manhattan
1-seat access from the suburbs of New Jersey and Long Island to a spacious, integrated rail hub in Lower Manhattan!
In this proposal, I have laid out a possible location for a commuter rail tunnel connecting both New Jersey Transit and the Long Island Rail Road to Lower Manhattan. Currently, Lower Manhattan is unserved by regional or intercity railways, neissating the need for commuters to transfer from the overcrowded hubs of Penn Station and Grand Central to subway lines downtown. Bringing a commuter rail tunnel downtown will ease the commute of people from New Jersey and Long Island, allowing 1-seat access to wherever their job may be.
Major rail hubs will be constructed outside Manhattan, at Secaucus and Queens Central, allowing for a multitude of ways to reach any part of Manhattan from any suburb with minimal fuss. 5 subway lines will connect to Queens Central, serving all reaches of Midtown Manhattan with a single subway ride. 4 new stations will be constructed under this plan: Newport, World Trade Center, Williamsburg, and Queens Central. Amtrak intercity and high-speed rail can also operate on the alignment, serving WTC and Queens Central and bypassing the other stations.
