Miami Metro Rail Transbay Extension

A line directly connecting together all of Miami’s tourist hotspots!

This WEBEO explores the possibilities of extending Miami’s MetroRail system across the Biscayne Bay to the Port of Miami and Miami Beach. Currently the beach and port are unserved by the MetroRail system, making local commutes and tourist transportation especially difficult throughout the entire region.

This line aims to ease the congestion and make travel in Miami more efficient. Tourists will finally have the ability to take a train from their hotel to the beach, airport, Lincoln Road, Bayfront Park, and other destinations in the Miami area. Additionally, the economies of previously unserved areas will benefit from the construction of such a system, as the high-tourist population of Miami demands more walkability and public transport than in most other American cities.

However, the line is expensive, especially when tunneling under the 4 mile wide Biscayne Bay, so ultimately it is the city’s decision on whether or not this be constructed and when. On the other hand, an extension can be made north of 21st street in Miami Beach if demand permits in the future.

Note: A new Santa Clara and Civic Centre station will have to be built underneath 12 avenue so that the extension can unobtrusively deviate from the existing line.

Stations (all underground): Santa Clara, Civic Centre, Marlins Park, East Little Havana, Government Centre, Bayfront Park, Port, South Beach, 5th Street, 11th Street, Lincoln Road, 21st Street

Line length = 9.41 miles (15.14 km)

Top speed = 60 mph (97 km/h)
