Johannesburg Underground Metro Rail

Transcend hemispheres through a new metro line serving central Johannesburg!

This WEBEO explores the possibilities of an underground metro rail system in the South African city of Johannesburg, which has a population of 5 million within its city limits. Johannesburg is the perfect candidate for such a metro system as there is high foot traffic/density throughout a large area of the central business district. Also, Park station, the main commuter railway station, away from the business districts, so the metro can help ease roadside congestion throughout the city. Finally, the metro will serve underserved regions of central Johannesburg by offering them an alternative to the existing and overcrowded BRT system.

The system consists of two lines. Line 1 connects from Mayfair to Troyeville going under Commissioner Street downtown. Line 2 intersects line 1 at Gandhi Square, and extends south to Rosettenville, and north to both the University of Johannesburg and Bellevue.

The system will be constructed using a deep tube style, as street disruption will be kept to a minimum. The stations are approximately 0.8 to 1 km apart.

Line 1 (5.61 km): Mayfair, Fordsburg, Westgate, Kort Street, GANDHI SQUARE, Von Wielligh Street, Slovo, Ellis Park, Troyeville

Line 2 (9.89 km): Rosettenville, La Rochelle, Stafford, Village Main, GANDHI SQUARE, Kerk Street, Park, (splits into east and west branch)

{West Branch: City Council, Melle, Witwatersrand, Sunnyside, Uitsaaisentrum, Auckland Park, University of Johannesburg}

[East Branch: Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville, Bellevue]
