Interstate 76 Shoulder Innovation
4 March 2016
A new way to handle increases in highway traffic!
This is a new Webeo format known as a "Webeovation," or an innovation to a type of transportation infrastructure that has long been overlooked. This Webeo looks at ways of increasing capacity of a four lane expressway, for example I-76 in Philadelphia. The shoulders in the proposal will be moved to the centre, with at least two travel lanes in each direction in the outer lanes. One or both of the inner shoulder lanes can be replaced by a rush hour only lane, leaving 5 lanes and still one shoulder. Thus, this offers many solutions over a standard situation of letting motorists use the breakdown lanes.
However, there are some flaws with my proposal: the safety of inner shoulders, and the education to drivers required for such a proposal to be implemented. However, if such a system were to be placed on Interstate 76, capacity will increase by more than 50%, without any physical widening to the roadway.
